PARROTT, Roland John William

No.34736, Private, Roland John William PARROTT
Aged 22

11th Battalion, Essex Regiment
formerly No.24290, Norfolk Regiment
Died of Illness on Tuesday, 6th March 1917

Roland John William PARROTT was born in Barnham (Thetford Q1-1895 4B:402), son of Richard Frederick and Emma PARROTT(née BLOMFIELD).
Only the war memorial spells his name Rowland.

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at St. Andrews Street, Mildenhall with his father Richard PARROTT [38] plumber born London; his mother Emma [29] born Watton; brother Alfred [8] born Barnham.

1911 census...Aged 16, a grocer's assistant, he was at Bear Street, Nayland with Wissington, Colchester with his mother. is father ( a grainer) and brother Alfred (a painter) were boarding at 7 Emlen Street, Ipswich with Walter and Velvo ELSEY.

No documentary evidence of his own Brandon connection has been found except his enlistment there and CWGC erroneously have him born in Brandon. His parents were at Station Road, Framlingham around the time of his death but later settled in Brandon and died there, so seemingly they moved to Brandon before the memorial was built.

He attested in Brandon.
He died of Bronchial Pneumonia at No.18 General Hospital, Camiers, France. One big problem is that none of the photos of ? Roland or his brother ? Alfred show the Norfolk or Essex cap badge. The brothers together shows both with the badge of the 12th London Regiment (The Rangers) and another of Alfred ? alone is with a Machine Gun Corps badge. A family member states that Alfred did serve for some time in the Machine Gun Corps. In the absence of either Army service record this remains a mystery.

Parrott brothers ? (Roland -left) however both with 12th Battalion, London Regiment cap badges

clearly 12th Battalion, London Regiment cap badges
